McLaren to modify speed limiter system
« on: March 20, 2008, 01:02:19 AM »
McLaren have said they will look into modifying their car's pitlane speed limiter system after Heikki Kovalainen accidentally activated it and lost fourth place in Sunday's Australian Grand Prix.

"We'll certainly look at changing it for the future," McLaren's engineering director Paddy Lowe told the autosport.com Web site on Wednesday.

"It shouldn't be something you can pick up by accident when you're moving your hands around."

The device is designed to ensure drivers do not incur penalties for breaking the speed limit when they enter and leave the pit lane.

Finland's Kovalainen inadvertently hit the button on the main straight in Melbourne while tearing a strip off the visor of his helmet after overtaking Renault's Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard promptly regained his position, leaving Kovalainen to finish fifth in a race won by McLaren's Lewis Hamilton. The teams return to action for round two of the season in Malaysia this weekend.
