S'pore F1: Race will feature new digital flag-off system

A DIGITAL flag-off system will be yet another first for the Formula One Grand Prix and will be used in the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix in September.

A panel of LED-like lights, flag masters will be able to trigger it off with a flag button.

The prototype was revealed by the lighting consultant Valerio Maioli in a preview on Saturday of the lighting system for F1's first night race.

Minister of State for Trade and Industry S. Iswaran was at the preview and he said the lighting is a crucial part of the race.

'We want to make sure that the lighting system is done in a manner that is safe for the drivers and the spectators at the same time we want it to enhance the experience for everyone,' he said.

'There have been a couple of trials in europe and this is the first time they are actually setting up something on our streets. By the looks of things it is quite promising.'

A 64-metre stretch along St Andrew's Road in front of the Padang was awashed with light from 16 lighting projectors installed on aluminium trusses supported by three towers.

Members of the public will be able to see the structure from 7pm till midnight daily till April 6.

The set up is just a fraction of the 1,500 lights for the track which will be four times brighter than that needed for a typical stadium.
