IE6 users warned to upgrade
« on: June 28, 2008, 09:52:02 AM »
Anyone using Internet Explorer 6 should upgrade to the latest version of the browser, IE7, to avoid security risks.

A researcher at security firm McAfee said that a scripting flaw in IE6 could lead to hackers gaining access to your computer.

McAfee recommends that users of IE6 should upgrade to IE7 or use an alternative browser such as Firefox.

"Until a patch is available, we advise IE6 users to disable scripting in the browser or upgrade to IE7 to avoid potential exploitation due to the public disclosure of this vulnerability," said McAfee's Yichong Lin.

Lin said that McAfee had informed Microsoft of the vulnerability.

I had trouble last time I downloaded IE7 Wiz, in the end I had to uninstall it and go back to IE6

33% of internet users use IE6. In other useless browser statistics, the iPhone's built-in browser has 8% of the internet market, putting it in the top 10 browsers. Not bad when you consider that there are at least four desktop browsers (IE7, IE6, Firefox 2 and Opera 9) ahead of it in the table.

A lot of people have had problems with IE7 (luckily I'm not one of them) so I cannot whole heartedly recommend it, but, if there is a security risk you would be well advised to seek an alternative for now.

Since Internet Explorer appears to be incompatible with my copy of Windows (and this applies to all the versions except the mobile one, which runs on my PDA's Windows Mobile), I've had to look for alternatives. This currently means a combination of Mozilla 2 and Opera 9 (Safari doesn't work on my computer either), but I'm thinking of upgrading to Mozilla 3 soon.

During the last race, we were discussing poblems with one of the live streaming feeds locking up. I could get the feed to run on a PC that had IE6, but not on one with IE7.
