Stars turn out for Hawthorn memorial

Sir Stirling Moss and Damon Hill joined the congregation today in a church service to mark the 50th anniversary of Mike Hawthorn's death.

Hawthorn, Britain's first Formula One champion, suffered fatal injuries in a road accident on 22 January 1959, just months after clinching the drivers' title.

Over 500 people attended the service at St Andrew's Church in Hawthorn's home town of Farnham, Surrey. Former Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis read a tribute to his friend and colleague's life.

Afterwards Dewis, Hill and Moss led a parade of historic vehicles through the town, including the 1955 Le Mans-winning Jaguar D-type and Hawthorn's first race car, a Riley Ulster Imp.
