great interesting piece Steven and brilliantly written. Also shows how modest heroes are too often hidden by politics, and other egos.

A really good read Sennaman, makes you wonder how many of the backroom boys now could actually eclipse the so called stars if they were fit enough.

a good point Ian and also the drivers who are really good enough but do not get the chance to drive because of being unable to bring enough sponsorship money to the table.

Couldn't you imagine Colin telling Jim Clark,"I have this nice
Lotus Jim.how many sponsors can you bring onboard"
Mark Twain once opined, "it's easier to con someone than to convince them they've been conned."

I haven't checked this thread for a while.  I hadn't realised anyone had read the item I wrote.

On Ian's point the day that Clark met Chapman they were racing Lotus Elites and Chapman one.  There can't be many team owners who signed a driver that they beat.

I did a batch of articles at the same time although a couple of them appeared on another site previously.  I was supposed to write a follow up batch and although I have had the subjects for ages I have written 25% of the first of four.

If anyone is suitably bored and looking for something to read the rest can be found at th links below.  There are a few fans of some of the subjects around here.

Read them all, sigh! I love history, racing especially. More please. By the way, I think clark was the best ever. Everyone remembers Suillivan's spin and win victory, but Clark once spun 4 times and finished 2nd. Foyt is rumored to have said he didn't think anyone could spin 4 times at Indy without hitting something. The best.
