FERRARI QUIT F1
« on: May 12, 2009, 03:58:26 PM »
Ferrari have announced they will quit Formula 1 at the end of the season if the sport continues with plans to enforce a £40m budget cap from 2010.

"If the rules do not change, Ferrari does not intend to register cars for the 2010 F1 world championship."

Keep in mind that the FIA is somewhat paralyzed right now.

Max has urgent family business to take care of.

Ferrari and Toyota can p*ss on the FIA all they want, a deal will come with or without the grandstanding.

Yeah, just who would we all be able to ridicule and complain about if we lose the Red Devils.

Of course it wouldn't be the same, they can be irksome, irascible, and irrepressible but Ferrari are irreplaceable.

F1 survived loosing Lotus and Ford. Ferrari wouldn't stay gone for long.

So will Ferrari depart from ALL FIA sanctioned events, or just Formula One?

Just F1.  They are discussing where else the team could compete, perhaps Le Mans or even a breakaway series.

FIA sanctions more than F1.  If Ferrari wants to pressure the FIA, they need to pull out of all formulae.

As for a breakaway, aren't the A1GP cars all Ferraris?

That's just the point, actually.  Ferrari objects to the rules imposed on F1, not the other FIA series.  And it is F1 that is the jewel in the FIA's crown - none of the other series has anything like the pulling power of F1.  Ferrari knows that, if it leaves F1, the series would lose its value as other teams depart and Max gets left with a few tiny independents all running Cosworth engines.  Luca doesn't need to extend the threat to all FIA series - he'll get what he wants without resorting to that.

This is an extract from the Times website this evening. Ferrari seem to be most upset about the FIA reneging on the contract they signed at the time of the previous teams revolt.

Ferrari have announced they are to withdraw from Formula One next season unless the FIA scraps plans to introduce a £40million budget cap.

The Italian team claim they will pull out of the sport because of an ongoing dispute with the governing body over its plans to introduce a limit to team spending from next season. Ferrari claim the changes violate the terms of a 2005 contract they signed committing themselves to the championship until the end of 2012, terms that include a “right of veto” on any technical regulation change.

"Ferrari confirms its opposition to the new technical regulations adopted by the FIA and does not intend entering its cars in the 2010 F1 Championship," a statement read on Ferrari's website.

So the FIA could possibly turf Ferrari from all levels of competition as their own threat?

People might hate shady backroom deals, but this public negotiation is just embarassing.
