TOKYO: Japan's Kazuki Nakajima has set his sights on a Formula One race seat following his appointment as a test driver for Williams.
"My ultimate goal is to be an F1 race driver," Nakajima told reporters on Friday. "I hope to achieve that in 2007."
The 21-year-old son of former F1 driver Satoru Nakajima is likely to get his first taste of Formula One in testing with Williams before the end of this year but a race drive looks a more distant dream.
Former champions Williams have Austrian Alexander Wurz and Germany's Nico Rosberg as their confirmed 2007 race line-up.
Nakajima will work with the Toyota-powered team's other test driver, Indian Narain Karthikeyan.
The Japanese will also compete in GP2, the Formula One feeder series, with the Le Mans-based DAMS team alongside Frenchman Nicolas Lapierre.
Nakajima competed in the Formula Three Euroseries this year and is a former Formula Toyota champion in Japan.
"His times are outstanding," Toyota motorsports division deputy general manager Hiromi Hayashi said. "He is very fast and has the physical strength to drive all day."
Williams have just completed their worst season in Formula One for 30 years, scoring only 11 points as they slumped to eighth of the 11 teams.
