Another Twit in a Veyron
« on: November 13, 2009, 12:51:21 PM »
Remember Monty Python's "Upper Class Twit of the Year" contest?

"A pelican made me crash the Veyron!"

A man blamed a low-flying pelican and a dropped cell phone for his veering his million-dollar sports car off a road and into a salt marsh near Galveston. The accident happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday on the frontage road of Interstate 45 northbound in La Marque, about 35 miles southeast of Houston.

The Lufkin, Texas, man told of driving his luxury, French-built Bugatti Veyron when the bird distracted him, said La Marque police Lt. Greg Gilchrist. The motorist dropped his cell phone, reached to pick it up and veered off the road and into the salt marsh. The Veyron’s powerful engine gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died. The car was half-submerged in the brine about 20 feet from the road when police arrived.

Gilchrist said he doesn't know if the car was salvageable, but in his words, "Salt water isn't good for anything." He says the man, whose identity hasn't been released, was not injured.

“You can search the world over for the finer things, but you won't find a match for the American road and the creatures that live on it.”
― Bob Dylan

What a plonker he was. Don't use your mobile when your driving otherwise you'll get "salted" out.

Think the tow guys could have taken it out of gear to drag it to the truck?

I once had a really nice camera that was sitting high up on the beach when a rogue wave came and drenched it in salt water.  When I went to the camera shop to ask the guy what he could do for the camera, he held it up over the garbage pail and said 'this?', and then dropped it straight in.  I wonder if the Bugati dealership will have about the same sort of response for the moron.

100% Ian - keep both hands on the wheel (unless you're shifting gears).

Thanks Scott, I'm not a facebook lemming either!

Nice to see what all the fuss is about, I have a suspicion however about how they just happen to be recording so well from the other car, using a parallel road, when it heads for the drink.

If the car wasn't worth over a million I might suggest it was staged. :DntKnw:

Another tidbit regarding the handsfree-ness of a Veyron...
That funny box thing you can see on the Bugatti's sunvisor is a Bluetooth handsfree device that syncs to your phone. It had to be added to the car because Jeremy needed to talk to the other two while driving, but despite having worked on the car for over five years, the Bugatti engineers weren't sure if the Veyron had a Bluetooth phone system.

WWHHHAAATTT..not sure if it had a ...nevermind...
