Ferrari F1 simulators
« on: December 28, 2009, 11:08:23 PM »
Ferrari is pushing itself further to create sensation in the world of racing by building its own F1 racing simulator. The simulator uses 10 linked computers, 60GB of RAM, five giant 3D video screens, a 3500-watt Dolby sound system, and weighs more than 200 tons.

The F1 simulators will help develop new cars besides training F1 drivers without breaking F1 rules by limiting testing in the real world. The technology will help drive a model of a virtual vehicle, experiencing sensations that can be referenced to a real one. With a sufficiently experienced driver and engineers, who analyze the results, it would be possible for a simulator test to produce data useful to the development of the car in terms of how the driver interacts with the handling and the controls on the vehicle.

Clever idea, to keep them within the FIA rules & regs, but I wonder how much it's setting them back, financially!!!!!???, still I suppose given their huge F1 budget, they can afford it!

I would have thought putting a helmet on and having a couple of lines and servo's pulling it back and forth to simulate the g-forces on the head while in the simulator would be a more realistic way to see how the driver handles things.

I like your thinking Scott, catch the drivers unawares about the real torture of F1. As the Monty Python team would say 'Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition'  :DD :DD
