Monaco GP secures new 10-year deal
« on: July 29, 2010, 12:35:07 PM »

So just what was Bernies verbal diarrhoea a couple of weeks ago over Monaco all about?

The Monaco Grand Prix has secured a new 10-year deal to remain on the Formula 1 calendar and will return to its late-May slot on the 2011 schedule.

A recent aside from Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone suggesting the sport could do 'without' the Monte Carlo street race, which dates back to 1929, had led to widespread media coverage questioning the Monaco GP's future, despite Ecclestone underlining that he had no intention of removing the race from the schedule.

Ecclestone and Automobile Club de Monaco president Michel Boeri met in London today and completed the new deal, which runs through to 2020.

Next year's race has also been scheduled for 29 May.

Good news!  :yahoo:

I didn't think that even Bernie could be stupid enough to get rid of Monaco, but one never knows with him.

That means that, again, two of the three most classic races, the GP of Monaco & The Indy 500, will be on the same day.

They're not at the same time. Indy starts several hours after the end of Monaco.

Besides, if cared what the rest of the world did, we'd be stuck with that b awful metric system, too.  :P

Lol John, just an obvious ploy to drive up the fee Monaco has to pay!

If Bernie was getting a dime from Monaco, you'd hear about it.

Probably the same deal as always.

It's no different than watching 2 world cup soccer games in the same day, one doesn't steal from the other, rather it makes them more exciting.

NASCAR knows the deal, and they run a 600 mile race the same night.  In the past drivers would try to race both the Indy 500 and the NASCAR 600 miler.  No one has won both, but there is a huge prize for doing so.

Since cars don't go far on a teaspoon of gas, no one cares how many teaspoons in a gallon. :P :P

What size wheels are on your car, Scott? Care to try to convert that to metric? ;)

Just to prove David's theory, 17" becomes 43 cms (43.18 to be precise), measurements of functional items are almost always in whole numbers so will be 43cm.  ;)  :P

The oddest thing I find is the sizeing of tyres in Britain, there is a combination of metric and imperial mesurements, eg: 225mm (width) 45mm (profile) but oddly 17 inch (wheel size), these are moulded onto the tyre for identification so it's obviously with official approval.    I can't think of any other example of a mix of the two, most items here are now sold in metric measure so an imperial equivalent is often added besides but not instead of.

thanks Jeri, I forgot Monaco is the only place that does not pay a dime to bernie for having a GP but i wonder if he was not applying some pressure for them to pay one for the new 10 year contract?  :DntKnw:

Yes, I have not seen any mention of the terms of this contract. Does Monaco now pay a fee? And did they retain their advertising rights? Interesting to know.
