Nürburgring Goes Bankrupt
« on: July 18, 2012, 06:43:06 PM »
The legendary Nürburgring is starting insolvency proceedings amid fears that it could run out of cash by the end of the month. The European Commission is considering aiding the German circuit. I hope they save it. The Ring is one of the truly classic venues.

One note on the linked article. It erroneously states that this week-end's German GP will be held at the Ring. The race will of course be at Hockenheim.

It's not really the racetrack, or the GP, that has brought the complex down it's the debt from leisure park, shopping mall and hotel. The famous Nordschleife is a big cash generator and along with the GP race track could work perfectly well as a separate business, and probably will. Looks pretty certain that the German GP is safe to continue alternating with Hockenheim and this is a move to clear debts to move forward.

Another article I've read on subject puts the present lack of government help down to the fact that of the Social Democratic Party losing their majority at the last election, it was them behind the €500million investment over the last decade in the facilities at Nurburgring. Yet another reason not to mix sport, or sport venues with politics.  ::)

Rumor has it that Bernie has offered to waive the race fee for next year's race in exchange for all the revenue, whatever it might be.
