No more double points

 :yahoo:
Just heard on BBC that the double points rule has been 'officially' dumped.

I was quite looking forward to standing starts.  :( Nothing much happens on the rolling starts after the S/C period now, all it does is bunch up the field to make it easier for any of the top runners out of position to exploit their superiority at an earlier opportunity with DRS to more easily get into the points.

Still this is what happens when you let the top half only of participants decide the rules - Turkeys just wont vote for Xmas.  :D

Standing starts are much more lively from us the spectators point of view, younger people love em because they are so unpredictable and frenetic. I confess I love em too.  ;)

Good riddance to double ups though,   although it did spice up the intro days to the last race.  :D

The end is near.....I finally after years agree with John....
I think standing starts would have spiced up F1

I'm delighted to see both proposals go to be honest.  They were very bad for Formula 1, especially the double points, while standing restarts would have just caused more safety cars, and an unnecessary time delay in my opinion.

I agree. Granted, the standing start would have been great fun to watch. The problem would have been pulling it off. I think it would have lead to a tremendous dead spot while the cars were sorted out & lined up.

While I am against the double points, I was in favor of the standing re-starts.

If they are going to keep the rolling re-starts, as it appears, there will be nothing to hope for from a safety car period.  If they offered something to bunch up the field, it would be good for the sport and the fans would like it.

While I don't watch much NASCAR, they do a few things that make a lot of sense and which I would welcome in some form to F1.  The "lucky dog" for example, gets one driver back on the lead lap.  I could see that as very beneficial to the racing aspect, particularly when there is a case of someone losing a lap due to having to limp around a 3 mile circuit to the pits for a tire that someone punctured and consequently are a lap down, especially early in the race.

They could also force a speed controlled limit until crossing the starting line on the lap the Safety Car pulls in, allowing several of the front runners to get up near the leading couple of cars.  Obviously, there could be no over-taking until the starting line has been crossed.

Goodbye double points, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Stupid idea! plain and simple.

As for standing restarts...depending upon how many safety car periods there are during the race and the time it would take to reform the field for a restart, the race may go over the allotted time more often.

I am also curious about why there is a formation lap and not just a start after the mechanics get off the grid. Is it to allow time for mechanics to clear and so the cars don't overheat while they wait?

It's to warm up the brakes, check the systems, and prepare for the start proper.  Just taking off from the grid without any preparations at all could be rather dangerous to say the least.

Double point did what it was meant to do, kept the pressure, forced Rosberg to make the horrible start, and now is gone. It did spiced up the last race, could have been much more fun had there been more than two contender for the title. Its a stipulation made clear at the beginning of the year, so I can't see the reason why this could not have continued, makes betting more fun in my opinion. Also standing start was something that could have spiced it up, drivers are no longer challenged with daring corners, gravel traps, or overtaking with mechanical grip, so adding these may have thrown a bit of challenge at them.

Next thing you know they'll start giving points for

did spice up the last race......would have been good

I have to disagree. Even without double points, Nico would still have been in striking range at the last race. If the championship had been decided by double points, many fans (including me) would have considered it tainted at best, fraudulent at worst.

I was a rabid NASCAR fan for my entire life. The whole "Race to the Chase to the Cup for the Thing" is one of the main reasons that I haven't even watched a complete NASCAR race in years.

If you have to stoop to gaming the points system to stir up interest in you races then maybe you should look at the racing itself.
