Schu crashes Ferrari road car prototype
« on: July 28, 2008, 09:33:15 PM »
Retired Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has continued his recent run of close calls at the wheel of high speed vehicles.

Following several falls as he enjoys semi-amateur motorcycle riding, it is now being reported that the 39-year-old German crashed a Ferrari road car last week while testing at the notorious Nordschleife circuit at the Nurburgring.

Last Tuesday, Schumacher was not injured when his prototype 430 Scuderia struck a guardrail and was written off, Bild newspaper said.

It is suggested that Ferrari was using the partially-damp circuit exclusively, when its former champion went off at more than 250kmh.

Ferrari said it wasn't Schumi at the wheel but Raffaele de Simone (their road car test driver).  Schumi was a passenger who had also tested the car but was riding with Raffaele to compare notes.

Probably went something like this.

"Are you absolutely sure you can go through here flat in fifth Michael?"
"Yes, I did it on my first flying lap"
"OK.  If you are sure you can do it I will give it a go"

Not much of a car if the great man cannot handle it?

But Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni insists that while Schumacher, 39, was in the passenger seat and had driven the car that day, it was road car test driver Raffaele de Simone who was at the wheel at the time of the crash.

"It is normal that test drivers swap seats to compare opinions," he is quoted as saying by Bild newspaper, which says eyewitness reports identified the actual driver of the car to be Schumacher.

Colajanni continued: "In this case de Simone lost control of the car and went into the guard rail."

He said both Schumacher and de Simone were unhurt.
