oh man, John gets in seconds ahead of me! LOLOLOL

Wish I could take all the credit CD,  ;)  however Dare got there ahead of me earlier today but then got cold feet and modified his post.  ::)    I guess he thought the answer was just too simple. :D

 - That's assuming 2 hour rule is the right answer of course.  :swoon:

I plead my case most honorable Wats-on :D ;)

IIRC the distance of a modern GP has to be 305Km to the nearest lap except for Monaco, but it wasn't always like that - prior to the late 60's, races were nearer the 400Km distance mark. When and why was the distance rule changed, and why to 305Km? I can't think it was due to TV constraints, as 40+ years ago the TV and advertising aspect was much less prominent in the business of GP racing. Was it to widen the gap between long distance racing and GP racing, or was it for safety reasons maybe?

The Monaco GP seems to be a special case - not only has the race distance nearly always been shorter than the normal rule, the race was reduced from 100 to 80 laps in 1968; I imagine for safety reasons as there was some thought that poor Bandini was fatigued at the time of his crash late in the '67 race. The shortening therefore took place at least a couple of years before other circuits - the Italian GP was shortened from 68 laps / 391Km in 1970 to 53 laps / 304.75Km in 1971. One wonders what the '71 result would have been if the race had gone the extra 15 laps!

Sorry for the dely. Had no internet for a couple of days...

I have to go for the 2-hours rule, although now and then the FIA doesn't apply to it itself.

New standings:
1.
John S: 70 points
2. F1Darrell: 69½ points
3. Dare: 53 points
4. Cosworth151: 42½ points
5. Ikjohnson1950: 20 points
6. Alianora La Canta: 20 points
7. Ian: 16 points
8. Cam: 13 points

New question:
What driver was carried to his car just before the start of his Formula 1-debut and was carried away after crashing out of his very last race? Name of the driver, and reasons, please.

This one shouldn't be too difficult... He has been the additional steward this year. (day 1 has past, 2 points to give yet)

Johnny Herbert

From Wikipedia:

Herbert, then a championship hopeful in International Formula 3000 was caught up in a major accident at Brands Hatch, badly breaking his legs in a fearsome impact with the barriers. It was an act of huge bravery that saw him back in a racing car at the beginning of 1989, despite the fact he could barely walk.

Moving to Stewart Grand Prix in 1999, he was routinely outqualified by his younger team mate Rubens Barrichello but scored his third and final Grand Prix win in a remarkable wet/dry European Grand Prix. Staying at Stewart after the team was purchased by Ford and became Jaguar, Herbert endured another frustrating and pointless season, ending the year being stretchered off at Malaysia after a suspension failure caused him to crash heavily.

M. Schumacher, 1998 British GP, serving a stop/go penalty in the pits on the last lap

Well, guys, this one cannot be too difficult. I know some of you have found one of my sources, so...

Ok, HINT
Don't look at Sauber for the answer.

Wats-on can you please clarify whether you want the answer about BMW as a team entrant, or BMW as the listed chassis constructor?

You say 'Formula 1', but do you include 1952-53 World Championship events, which were for Formula 2 cars?
I'm not sure which 1952-53 BMW-based Eigenbau cars had BMW chassis so I'll list them all

Marcel Balsa 1952 BMW
Karl-Gunther Bechem (Bernhard Nacke) 1952, 1953 BMW Eigenbau
Rudolf Krause  1952 BMW-Reif and 1953 BMW-Greitzu
Ernst Klodwig 1952 and 1953 BMW-Heck (probably not as it was rear engined)
Edgar Barth 1953 EMW (possibly a BMW chassis)
and in Formula 1
Robert Kubica 2008 & 2009
Nick Heidfeld 2005, 2008 & 2009
Antonio Pizzonia 2005
and you've said the BMW Sauber years don't count so presumably when BMW had a controlloing interest in Williams doesn't count either

Oh sorry!  I thought the idea was to try and answer the question.

If that upsets you I'll happily go on my way.

Good bye

I think somehow you misunderstood something here. As it is quite an old post, he was referring it as a revival of this post once again.

I hope you will reconsider of leaving the forum unless you have strong reason to do so.
